What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones are hard deposits that form inside the kidneys from minerals in the urine. They are very common, and most can be treated effectively - especially when caught early.
Common symptoms
The most typical sign is sudden, severe pain in the side or back, sometimes spreading to the lower abdomen. Other signs include blood in the urine, a frequent urge to urinate, nausea, or burning while passing urine.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor promptly if you have severe pain, fever with urinary symptoms, blood in the urine, or difficulty passing urine. Small stones may pass on their own with fluids and medication; larger stones are treated with minimally invasive procedures such as URS, RIRS or PCNL.
